8th Grade Academy

Our Program for Transitioning to High School

Our 8th Grade Academy helps underserved youth prepare for the transition to high school and begin thinking about college and career. Programs meet twice per week during the school year. We also include numerous college trips and community-based events on Saturdays to help support our youth and connect with opportunities.

Based on years of research and our own experiences with this age group, we focus on the following areas of development for our 8th graders.

Personal Development

We help youth journey through the process of finding their own voices by investigating their identity and utilizing personality assessments. We also work with our youth on expressing positive emotions and sharing their voice in a respectful way with others.

Community Building

We help our youth work together to build a team environment and develop healthy social relationships, while including lessons on cultural competency and conflict resolutions. We also help our youth investigate the role they have in building community through community service activities.

Success Skills

To help our youth succeed at school and beyond, we work with them to develop time management and studying skills, while teaching the importance of staying organized. We also discuss topics on our digital footprints and how to use technology appropriately.

Future Planning

We want our youth to begin thinking about and planning for their future, so we help each of our youth investigate their interests and goals and begin planning their own unique professional path. We also work with them to develop necessary job skills, including interviewing and working as a team.

“In high school we get a lot more freedom, but we also get a lot more responsibility. We build teamwork and cooperation here at On the Road, and we’re going to need those skills in high school.”

— Eamon, On the Road youth
