On the Road Collaborative Partners with Second Home to Make "The Beat Go On"

Thanks to The Merck Foundation, On the Road Collaborative has partnered with Second Home during the 2015-2016 school year to deliver its Career Enrichment programming. In the fall, JMU Nursing led a project about various nursing topics and career paths, and this spring, Ms. GT is leading a science exploration project about the heart. Check out below for how the beat goes on…

Led by Ms. Gilchrist-Thompson, affectionately known as Ms. GT, a science teacher for Harrisonburg City Public Schools, youth at Second Home have been learning all about the science of the heart this semester by constructing a model of a 4 chamber heart.

Throughout this 10-week project, youth have learned the functions of a heart, valves, circulation and how blood moves throughout the body. Youth even got to take a field trip to the James Madison University’s Anatomy Lab (no pictures allowed!), where they had a hands-on experience by touching a human heart.
