University for Parents

Our program for parents

University for Parents (UP) is a grant-funded initiative, in partnership with Harrisonburg City Public Schools, that provides information and training to local parents so that they’re empowered to serve as the primary partner in their child’s education. UP allows us to impact the entire family through interactive workshops that  increase parents’ information, skills and confidence so they can better advocate for their child.

HERE’S WHAT MAKES University for parents UNIQUE:

Workshops cover a wide variety of topics

Workshops are held on Saturday mornings throughout the school year and topics are chosen based on what parents most want to know regarding their child’s education. Past workshops covered Post-Secondary Options, Financial Literacy and Paying for College, Mental Health Awareness, and Social Media Training, among others.

WORKSHOPS are led by local experts

UP workshops are facilitated by experienced professionals in their respective fields, many of whom work in the local schools. This allows families to better get to know the teachers and staff who work with their children throughout the school day, while also creating a small, supportive community where parents can ask questions.

English Classes and child care are also included

UP partners with Skyline Literacy to provide adult English Classes for parents who are English Language Learners. This opportunity connects families to a supportive peer network while providing instruction in learning the English language. Child care is also provided during all UP workshops so parents can focus on their own learning.
