Fall '22 Learning Showcases

Every semester, we come back together again to provide educational opportunities and hands-on learning experiences for youth in the Shenandoah Valley. And Fall 2022 was a semester to remember!

Through our 10-week Career Enrichment Courses, led by Community Teachers, our youth were exposed to a variety of unique and interesting career paths that helped them develop a clearer understanding of their interests, skills, and future pathways.

These are the types of opportunities you help provide when you support our organization and join our Promise Campaign this year opportunities that help put local youth on the road to college and career.

During our Career Enrichment Courses, youth have the opportunity to learn about a variety of career paths, including business, art, healthcare, law, and so much more.

All of our Career Enrichment classes culminate with a Learning Showcase where youth have an opportunity to teach back what they have learned through an authentic product, performance, or presentation.

This semester, our youth showed off the unique projects they built, showcased special performances, and provided delicious meals prepared by their own hands. As always, our attendees were in awe by everything our youth learned and accomplished this semester!

We started off this exciting week at Thomas Harrison Middle School (THMS) for their Learning Showcase.

THOMAS HARRISON MIDDLE SCHOOL LEARNING SHOWCASE

THMS youth had the chance to show family and friends their crochet projects, their cupcake decorating skills, the knowledge and skills they learned during Civics, and an exciting STEM project they built.

Our Theatre youth had the opportunity to perform the play they had worked on this semester in front of their families, and it was a blast to see them shine!

A few more photos below including two of our amazing Thomas Harrisonburg Middle Schoolers helping run the showcase, a snapshot of our Community Teachers and youth from our Healthcare course, youth sharing about their habitat projects, and our TMHS Emerging Chefs class serving a meal.

KATE COLLINS MIDDLE SCHOOL LEARNING SHOWCASE

Next up was our Learning Showcase at Kate Collins Middle School! This was our first semester of programming and was another amazing opportunity to connect with our newest program site and see all of our Waynesboro youth and staff together.

Our Program Director, Angela Mickens, kicked off our evening before we moved on to sharing and celebrating with our youth. We also had the chance to connect with some of our amazing Community Teachers, including Capt. Zullig with the Waynesboro Police Department (shown above, right photo).

Our 8th grade youth presented what they learned in Diva Girls, a Career Enrichment led by Mary Baldwin University students, to their famililes. It was amazing to see the work they did together this semester!

Youth got the chance to show their how to write a check, which they learned during their Banking career enrichment led by Jennifer Witt from United Bank. Our 8th graders also presented on their presenting their Community College experience, which was made possible thanks to our partnership with the Blue Ridge Community College.

These are just a few of the highlights from this evening but it was such a wonderful time of connecting with fellow staff, family, and friends.

SKYLINE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEARNING SHOWCASE

Our Skyline Middle School Learning Showcase kicked off with an exciting opening ceremony that included a wonderful performance from a few of our On the Road youth who are also a part of the middle school band.

After our opening ceremony, youth showcased projects and performances from their classes, including Fishing is Fun, Makeup Artist, Event Planning, and Veterinarian, among others.

Some photos below!

Youth from our VOICES Club, shown below, also got to show off their projects. VOICES offers English Language Learners and Newcomers a safe space to increase their English literacy while developing an interest in reading and writing through hands-on tutoring, group discussions, and creative composition assignments.
